King Faisal University was founded in 1975 (1395H) by royal decree with main campus in the city of Hofuf in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia. The university was inaugurated by the late King Faisal Bin Abdulaziz.
KFU is one of the oldest and admirable higher education and research public university in the nation.
By 2010 the number of colleges at KFU has risen to 14 these includes Agriculture and Food Science, Veterinary Medicine and Animal Resources, Medicine, Engineering, Clinical Pharmacy, Science, Computer Science and Information Technology, Business Administration, Education, Arts, applied studies and community service, Community College for girls, Applied Medical Sciences, Dentistry.
The King Faisal University Central Cooling Plant is built to supply chilled water to the new develop buildings inside the King Faisal University campus. The chiller plant is designed to supply a chilled water temperature of 3.6⁰C (38.5⁰F) with a design return temperature from the building of 14.4⁰C (58⁰F) (as per the chiller technical specification) with a calculated maximum flow rate of 31,016 GPM. The total design output capacity of the chiller plant is 25,200 (TR) Tons of Refrigerant and an approximate calculation design input power of 26,288.93 kW considering an overall plant performance of 1.043 kW/TR.
The chiller plant is equipped with nine (9) Water-Cooled Centrifugal Chiller (8 Duty and 1 Stand-By) with an individual capacity of 3,150 TR each, nine (9) Chilled Water Pump (8 Duty and 1 Stand-By) with an individual design flow rate of 3,877 GPM, nine (9) Condenser Water Pump (8 Duty and 1 Stand-By) with an individual design flow rate of 9,290 GPM and eight (8) cooling tower with a design motor power of 185 kW for cooling tower one (1) to six (6) and 149.2kW for cooling tower seven (7) and eight (8).
The Water-Cooled Centrifugal Chiller is driven by a 2,708 kW Induction Motor with a voltage of 13.8 kV for Chiller 1 to 7 and 4.16 kV for Chiller 8 and 9. The motor starter design is reduced voltage autotransformer manufactured by Eaton Cutler-Hammer. The Chilled Water Pumps starters is Variable Speed Drive to ensure sufficient flow across the evaporator of the chiller. The Condenser Water Pumps starters are Soft Starter ensuring less inrush current from motor. Cooling Towers Motor is capable to operate in 2 speeds with individual Direct Online Starter that can operate based on the ambient condition and condenser water temperature of the chiller.
STOM has been working in close collaboration with government entities to streamline the cooling demand requirements facilitated by the development of mega-projects.
